Ensuring
no child is overlooked

Our Pre-K Vision Program offers free, non-invasive vision screenings in early childhood.

One out of four children have a vision problem that affects learning. Early detection and correction of these vision issues gives every child the chance to thrive in school.

What is the MedRVA Pre-K Vision Program?

Since 2015, we’ve offered advanced vision screenings for children, emphasizing early detection of visual health and fostering community outreach. Building on the philanthropic legacy of the Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital, the MedRVA Pre-K Vision Program conducts year-round screenings at schools and childcare facilities across Central Virginia. These screenings are offered free of charge to children.

Undetected vision problems can be a significant obstacle to a child’s education and well-being, potentially leading to academic struggles, behavioral challenges, and future employment difficulties.

We not only identify vision issues but also collaborate with parents, schools, and community partners to ensure timely intervention. Impaired vision should never get in the way of a child’s desire to learn.

The program also includes an optional curriculum component focused on teaching kids about the importance of eye health. This curriculum includes engaging activities (story time, a motor skills activity, and arts & crafts) to help children understand the importance of regular eye check-ups and proper eye care habits.

How Pre-K vision screening works

Free vision screening for kids

Preschools, daycares, churches, camps and other community organizations request a no-cost screening from the MedRVA Foundation.

We provide consent forms for parents to fill out, as well as pamphlets explaining the program.

Our trained professionals use safe, non-invasive vision instruments to check for the most common vision problems in children.

The screening takes less than 10 seconds per child!

We provide results for each child by the next day and help coordinate any needed follow-up care.

Help us get on the road

For many of our medically underserved neighbors in Central Virginia, transportation is a major obstacle to getting vision care. That’s why the MedRVA Foundation is raising money for a Mobile Vision Clinic to make eye exams and other services more accessible. We need you to help us get our mobile clinic on the road!
