In honor of Low Vision Awareness Month in February, MedRVA’s Pre-K Vision Program was recently featured on Virginia This Morning to discuss how we are helping young children identify vision problems early, ensuring they have the best chance to thrive in school and life.
Why Early Vision Screening Matters
Vision is critical to a child’s development, especially when it comes to learning and engaging with the world around them. However, many children suffer from undiagnosed vision issues that can go unnoticed, affecting their ability to learn, socialize, and grow.
Since 2015, our Pre-K Vision Program has provided free, non-invasive vision screenings to children in daycare centers, schools, and other community organizations throughout Central Virginia. By identifying potential vision problems early, we can offer children the help they need before these issues impact their learning journey.

Virginia This Morning
Earlier this month, we had the privilege of being featured on Virginia This Morning to highlight the importance of early vision screenings. During the segment, we discussed how our Pre-K Vision Program is making strides in catching eye conditions that are often undiagnosed.
The segment was an incredible opportunity to share the story of how these screenings not only help detect vision problems like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) but also raise awareness about the crucial connection between vision and overall child development. You can watch the full show on CBS6’s website here.
Through partnerships with schools, daycare centers, and community organizations, we’re able to ensure that children receive the support they need to succeed both academically and socially. With early detection, many vision problems are treatable, preventing long-term effects on a child’s educational experience.
Empowering Communities Through Education
Along with vision screenings, the MedRVA Foundation is committed to empowering children, parents, and teachers with knowledge about eye health. Our program includes a comprehensive curriculum that teaches young children about how their eyes work, why vision matters, and what they can do to protect their eyesight. By educating children from an early age, we can instill healthy habits and help them understand the importance of caring for their eyes.
We also ensure that parents and guardians are equipped with the resources they need to take the next steps in their child’s care if an issue is detected during screening. Early intervention can make a world of difference, and we’re proud to be a resource for families in need.

How You Can Get Involved
For many of our medically underserved neighbors in Central Virginia, transportation is a major obstacle to receiving essential healthcare services — especially vision care. Unfortunately, this barrier often results in undiagnosed vision problems that can affect a child’s learning, development, and overall quality of life.
At the MedRVA Foundation, we are committed to breaking down these barriers and ensuring that every child has access to vision care, regardless of their geographic location or economic status. That’s why we are excited to announce our fundraising campaign to support the development and operation of a Mobile Vision Clinic.
We need your support to make this vision a reality. We are raising funds to purchase and operate the Mobile Vision Clinic, and every donation brings us one step closer to making eye care more accessible to the children and families who need it most.

Here’s how you can help:
- Donate: Your donation, no matter the size, will help fund the purchase and operation of the Mobile Vision Clinic. Every dollar counts, and your generosity will directly impact the lives of children in need.
- Spread the Word: Help us raise awareness by sharing this campaign with your network, family, and friends. The more people who know about our mission, the closer we’ll get to our goal.
- Get Involved: If you’re part of a school, daycare center, or community organization, we invite you to partner with us! Your organization could host the MedRVA Pre-K Vision Program for screenings, ensuring that children in your area have access to essential care.
MedRVA’s Pre-K Vision Program is just one example of how we’re making a tangible impact on the health and wellbeing of our community. To learn more about the MedRVA Pre-K Vision Program, visit our website here or call us at 804-545-7044 to schedule a screening.
Let’s help our kids see their brightest futures!
